Chiropractic Care for Whiplash Injuries

Receiving Chiropractic Care for Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash injuries are a common injury, but one that can cause severe and sudden pain and discomfort. Whiplash occurs when your neck goes through an acceleration and then deceleration force suddenly. It most commonly occurs after an automotive collision, but impact sports can also cause the injury. Because your head is moving backward and forward at a rapid pace, it causes your ligaments and muscles to go through an unusual range of motion. Whiplash ranges from mild to severe, with multiple treatment options.
Causes of Whiplash Injuries
Whiplash is caused by any rapid movement (usually from behind) that causes the head and neck to snap forward and backward in a swift movement. It is common in a vehicle accident when you aren’t moving or going very slow and someone from behind hits you and is driving fast. Your neck goes into hyperextension which can then cause whiplash. Cameras have found that whiplash is mainly from the rear impact of the lower bones in the neck, called the lower cervical vertebrae, to go into hyperextension.
Symptoms of Whiplash Injuries
Whiplash Injuries rarely shows signs the first few hours, but usually in the first 24 hours. This includes a headache, usually as the base of the skull, stiffness of the neck and generalized neck pain, dizziness, fatigue, and blurry vision. Moderate to severe whiplash cause ringing in the ears, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, irritability and problems sleeping. If you have weakness, tingling or numbness in your arms, pain going to the shoulders and arms or you can’t move your head without pain, seek medical attention.
Conditions Associated with Whiplash
Before discussing chiropractic care for whiplash, you should first understand the different types of medical conditions and injuries.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Whether it is a short-term injury or a long-term medical condition, you want to reduce the pain and inflammation of a particular body part. With so many medication allergies coming to light and side effects of them, many are turning more and more to the alternative treatments such as acupuncture and chiropractic care. But is it safe? Here is what you’ll want to know before making your chiropractic appointment.
Generalized Appeal and Safety of Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care has been deemed safe for quite a while, with studies in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in March of 2004 showing it even more effective than a more traditional medical procedure for low-back pain sufferers. This is just one example of the effectiveness and the safety of the procedure. According to the American Chiropractic Association, it is one of the safest non-invasive therapies that is also drug free. Chiropractic care is deemed safe and used for a wide variety of conditions such as:

Back pain
Arm or leg joint pain
Neck pain
Headaches
TMJ issues
Neuromuscular issues

As well as some other conditions such as fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. While spinal manipulation works to get the body back in alignment, soft tissue work on the knotted muscles and tissues helps in conditions like fibromyalgia.
Neck Manipulations
Of all the treatments patients worry about the most it is neck manipulations. They fear lasting injuries and generally tense up at this part of the alignment process. However, the rarity of injury from this procedure is only 1 in 5.85 million neck manipulations. This means that you are more likely to get into a serious car accident on the way to the chiropractic clinic than you are at risk for a serious injury from a neck […]

Cost of Back Pain in Older Adults

The Cost of Back Pain in Older Adults

As with many other chronic conditions, the cause of back pain in older adults may be very different than in younger individuals. Back pain may occur at almost any time during the lifespan, though studies indicate that that seniors and the elderly have a disproportionately higher risk for falling – which can result in debilitating pain. Research also shows that genetics play a role in disc degeneration, which can also cause pain. For elderly patients especially, an episode of low back pain needs to be evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
Back pain is discomfort felt in the back that can originate from muscles, nerves, bones, joints, or other spinal structures. Degenerative changes in the lower back are normal in the aging process. Discs lose water content, which allow adjacent vertebrae to approximate each other, increasing wear on the cartilage. Nerve roots may get compressed and impinge on the spinal canal, causing pain. Pain intensity can range from light muscle or posture-related discomfort to debilitating pain that greatly reduces the quality of life. The good news is that on most occasions, back pain can be successfully treated without surgery using alternative options such as muscle stimulation, chiropractic care and physical therapy.

Chiropractic for Low Back Pain suggested by AMA

Chiropractic for Low Back Pain Suggested by AMA and Others

Chiropractic for low back pain is suggested by the AMA and others. In a recent article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), it was recommended that patients looking for alternative treatment for low back pain first try chiropractic care before considering surgical procedures. The article states that many individuals can benefit from conservative chiropractic care, and that surgery is often only necessary when other more conservative treatments fail. Previous research has shown that chiropractic care for low back pain is more cost effective than either surgery or drug therapy, and saves patients money. The first phase is often pain relief, and the second phase is to correct the problem. The goal is to help patients maintain a healthy, pain-free back. The information in the JAMA article reinforces the American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) position, which states, “Conservative care options should serve as a first line of defense against pain.”

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide. Half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.

It is one of the most common reasons for missed work, and the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office. More than $50 billion each year is spent on low back pain, and experts estimate that as many as 80% of us will experience a back problem in the future.
